Gluten-Free, Allergy-Friendly Pantry Guide

Here is a list of allergy-friendly brands to point you in the right direction when searching for safe, allergy-friendly products in your home.

This information is up to date as of the publishing of this book, in March 2024. Because brands can change ingredients and processes anytime, we recommend that families always check the company’s website before purchasing.

Note that while there are many other options available, the brands presented are selected based on shared equipment status. About 30% of people with food allergies are not able to eat food made on shared equipment. With that in mind, this list focuses on brands that are gluten-free, top 8/9 free, and use clean equipment.

Bakery

Bread

  • Against the Grain (gluten free, contains some allergens, contact for more information)
  • B-Free Foods (top 8 free, B-Free-owned facility, call for sesame info)

Tortillas

  • Siete Foods (gluten free, some tortillas contain major allergens, contact for more information)

Breakfast & Cereal

Oats

  • GF Harvest (gluten free, purity protocol)
  • Zego Foods (gluten free, purity protocol)

Cereal

  • Arrowhead Mills (allergy aware, very transparent, many gluten- and dairy-free options)
  • Awsum Snacks (contact for more information)
  • Freedom Foods (allergy friendly, contact for more information)
  • Lovebird Foods (grain free, contact for more information)
  • Nature’s Path (allergy aware, very transparent, many gluten- and dairy-free options)

Please note, if you’re new to gluten free, a box of cereal may say “gluten free” on the front, but that doesn’t mean the statement is completely true. Terms like those are not regulated and there have been thousands of reported reactions to Cheerios cereal specifically, even though it says gluten free. The community knows to avoid them, especially if you have celiac disease.

 Granola

  • Red Plate Foods (top 9 free, very transparent, contact for more information)
  • Safe + Fair (gluten free, top 8 free, contact for more information)

For those who can have tree nuts, investigate “paleo granola.” There are several companies available, but you’ll need to investigate each one for other allergens.

Waffles

  • Banza (gluten free, very transparent, contains eggs, contact for more information)
  • Nature’s Path (gluten free, very transparent, contact for more information)

Dairy Alternatives

Dairy-Free Cheese

  • Babybel (their website says clean equipment but we could not confirm, contact for more information)
  • Follow Your Heart (review their allergen chart on the FAQ portion of the website, the Parm Shreds are top 9 free)
  • Kite Hill (email for more information on shared equipment and use of major allergens)
  • Miyoko’s Creamery (dairy free, very transparent, contains other major allergens, some items made in their exclusive facility, contact for more information)
  • Vio Life (note that one step of their process uses shared equipment with dairy)

There are other options available, but these are the best if you’re trying to avoid shared equipment with dairy.

Dairy-Free Yogurt

  • Kite Hill (only the 5 oz. cups are made on dairy free equipment, contact for more information)
  • Vega Sport (dairy-free equipment, but very hard to find)

There are other options available, but these are the best if you’re trying to avoid shared equipment with dairy. Additionally, for those who are wheat/gluten free, you’ll be hard pressed to find an oat yogurt brand using gluten-free, purity protocol oats.

Dairy-Free Butter

  • Earth Balance (the commercial 30 lb. box is top 8 free and the cleanest option available)

All dairy-free butter is a 1:1 exchange in recipes. However, the taste will not be the same, and might be more noticeable when cooking something like pancakes or spreading on toast. For those who can have soy, coconut and tree nuts, there are a lot of dairy-free butter options available. If you’re struggling to find options, search online for “vegan butter” which should get you results. Be sure to look out for engineered milk proteins in vegan products which will cause a reaction if you are allergic to milk.

For those managing multiple severe allergies or less common allergies (such as corn, sunflower, and pea), tiger nut oil (tuber, NOT a tree nut) is an excellent replacement for butter. It works in cooking, baking, mashed potatoes, pancaking-making and just about anywhere else you’d normally need butter. Tiger nut oil has a mild flavor and is full of nutritional benefits.

Meat & Seafood

  • Hilary’s Eat Well (gluten free, allergy friendly, contact for more information)
  • The Jackfruit Co. Pulled Jackfruit (plain jackfruit only, contact for more information)
  • Edward & Sons Jackfruit (contact for more information)

Produce

For most people, fresh produce won’t be an issue. For those who are corn free, review the corn-free pantry guide. The only area of recent concern will be product coatings such as Apeel. For those with concerns, start with a local farmer’s market.

Dates

  • Woodspur Farms/Oasis Dates (only one facility makes tree-nut-free dates and date paste, contact for more information).

Generally, dates are always going to be processed alongside tree nuts. For more date options, check out LocalHarvest.org for leads on date farms that might be able to ship to you.

Special note: Maple sugar and maple syrup can be contaminated with dairy and corn. Most companies also use honey or bee products during the processing. What you need to be concerned about is called a defoamer. Neither the defoamer nor processing aides are legally required to be on the labels.

A defoamer is used during the boiling of maple sap. As the sap foams, a defoamer is added to remove the foam. Common defoamers are sunflower seed oil, safflower oil, canola oil or (milk) cream.
